Cute patterns that warm the heart

The small, lovely flowers on the vessels are inspired by the patterns of old Tobe ware from the Edo period, utilizing "sometsuke," a characteristic technique of Tobe ware. The patterns elegantly merge the charm of bygone eras with contemporary tastes, making them fashionable and endearing.

Warm-toned blue

The blue of the small flowers has a soft, gentle texture. The gentle and lovely blue floral pattern beautifully enhances your dishes. Furthermore, the fine crazing on the surface highlights its elegance even more.

For side dishes and sweets

With a depth of approximately 3.5cm, it's safe for serving juicy side dishes like nimono (simmered dishes), shira-ae (white sesame dressing), and hiyayakko (chilled tofu). It's also recommended for serving sweets such as Japanese confectioneries and baked goods. The rim is slightly curved inwards, making it difficult for contents to spill and easy to scoop, making it a convenient and treasured item.

Enjoy the unique character of each vessel

Each handmade piece has a unique warmth and character, from the green color that appears due to the glaze's reaction, the varying sizes of iron spots caused by iron in the clay reacting during firing, and the crazing that forms from the difference in shrinkage rates between the body and glaze after firing, to the subtle variations in size, shape, and blurriness of the hand-painted patterns.

Each piece is handmade, so there may be individual differences in color, color intensity, shape, thickness, size, weight, glaze unevenness/pooling, slight wobbling, and subtle variations in patterns. Please enjoy these as unique characteristics of handmade craftsmanship. We cannot guarantee which specific item you will receive, but we hope you will look forward to its arrival. If you are concerned, please feel free to contact us before shipping, and we can send you additional photos via email.

 Tobe Ware

Tobe ware is pottery made in Tobe Town, Iyo-gun, Ehime Prefecture, and its surrounding municipalities. It began to be produced in the mid-Edo period and has a history of approximately 240 years. In 1976, four types—white porcelain, sometsuke (blue and white) pieces, celadon, and tenmoku (iron glaze)—were designated as national traditional crafts, and in 2005, it was designated as an intangible cultural asset of Ehime Prefecture. There are nearly 100 kilns in and around Tobe Town, and the characteristics of Tobe ware are said to be its white porcelain with blue patterns, its plump, thick, unadorned shapes, and the hardness of its material. Additionally, the arabesque pattern is a representative design, and other traditional patterns include the shepherd's purse pattern, the tokusa (horsetail) pattern, and the sun pattern. Currently, while inheriting traditional techniques and patterns, new designs of Tobe ware are also being created.

Precautions for Use from Tousaigama Nagato Pottery

〇 Since original clay and glaze are used, crazing that resembles patterns will appear. As it is used, stains will emerge, but they propose "growing vessels" where these stains become part of its character.

Understanding "Vessels"
〇 Due to being handmade, each piece will have individual differences in color, shape, pattern, size, thickness, weight, etc. Also, even with the same glaze and clay, color unevenness and variations in shade will occur.
〇 Since each piece is hand-painted, the expressions may differ.
〇 Depending on the manufacturing process, products may have small holes, tiny black spots, scratches, protrusions, pinholes, wobbling, or distortion.
〇 While we process images as much as possible to ensure they are close to the actual product's color, the color and texture may appear different depending on your computer or smartphone display.
〇 We deliver products that have passed not only inspections by the manufacturer, kiln, and artist but also our final inspection.
〇 Product photos are sample shots, so the item you receive will not be identical in every detail.
〇 We do not accept returns or exchanges due to customer convenience. Please understand and agree to this before purchasing.
〇 We hope you enjoy the "flavor" and "interest" unique to handmade items, which mass-produced factory items do not possess!
