Warm and expressive ceramics

Because these are items for everyday use, they feature simple, timeless designs with a sense of warmth. Each piece is carefully crafted in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, with a focus on ergonomics and ease of use, designed to fit seamlessly into the lives of those who use them.

"Kohiki" is a technique where brown clay is coated with a white slip (a layer of clay distinct from glaze, used to finish the surface in white) before firing. By applying white slip to a specially formulated red clay rich in iron from Shigaraki and firing it twice, the pottery acquires a soft, gentle white texture. The charm of Kohiki lies in its unique appearance—simultaneously rustic and elegant.

The faint pinkish spots are a kiln effect known as "Gohonde." The black spots appearing here and there, called "Tetsusan," are caused by the iron content in the clay during firing. Both are natural characteristics that, combined with the unique firing colors and slip coverage of each individual piece, allow you to enjoy the distinct charm of handcrafted work. This gentle white highlights the colors of your food and harmonizes beautifully with a wide variety of cuisines and other tableware, whether Japanese or Western.

Even your usual meals will feel comforting and pleasant simply by serving them on tableware from Furutani Pottery. These are pieces that encourage you to cherish not just special occasions, but your everyday meals as well. They are ceramics that gently snuggle up to your daily life.

Because each piece is handmade, there are individual differences in color, shape, size, weight, and glaze consistency. Additionally, due to the way the glaze is applied, the firing color, pinholes, and iron spots (black dots) will vary from piece to piece. Please be assured that this does not affect usage. We hope you will enjoy the unique character and charm of handmade items. While you cannot choose which piece you will receive, we hope you look forward to its arrival. If you have concerns, please contact us before shipping and we will be happy to email you separate photos of the specific item.

Recommended Care and Precautions from Furutani Pottery
〇Before first use, wash gently with detergent and use as is.
〇When serving oily or strongly colored foods, rinse the piece with water first to dampen it; this will help prevent staining.
〇Because the ceramic is porous, it may change color to grey or develop spots when soaked in water, but it will return to its original state once completely dried.
〇After use, please dry thoroughly before storing to prevent mold and staining.

Notes on your purchase of handcrafted tableware
〇Because each piece is handmade, there are individual differences in color, shape, pattern, size, thickness, and weight. Even with the same glaze and clay, differences in shade and intensity will occur.
〇Designs are hand-painted, so expressions may vary.
〇Depending on the manufacturing process, some items may have small holes, black spots, linear marks, protrusions, pinholes, wobbling, or slight warping.
〇While we process images to reflect the actual color as accurately as possible, the colors and textures may look different depending on your computer or smartphone display screen.
〇In addition to inspections by the manufacturer or artist, we also perform a final inspection before delivering our products.
〇Product photos are samples; every individual item sent will differ in fine detail.
〇We do not accept returns or exchanges for customer convenience. Please understand this before purchasing.
〇We hope you enjoy the "charm" and "character" of handcrafted items that you won't find in mass-produced products!
