Expressive pottery that evokes warmth
Because they are items used every day, we focus on a simple design that is warm and timeless. Crafted one by one in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, these pieces are made with careful attention to ease of holding and use, designed to sit comfortably alongside the lives of those who use them.

"Kohiki" is a technique where white slip (a clay coating used to finish the surface white, distinct from glaze) is applied over brown clay before firing. By applying white slip over a custom-blended Shigaraki red clay—which is rich in iron—and firing it twice, a soft, airy white texture is achieved. The charm lies in the unique look of Kohiki, which is rustic yet possesses an understated elegance.

Because each piece is handmade, there are individual differences in color, shape, size, thickness, weight, and glaze unevenness. Additionally, the firing results, pinholes, and iron spots (black dots) will vary depending on how the glaze was applied. Please be assured that this does not affect usage. We hope you enjoy these unique characteristics as part of the appeal of handmade items. While you cannot choose which specific item you will receive, we hope you look forward to its arrival. If you have any concerns, please contact us before shipping and we will send you photos via email.

| Recommended Care Instructions from Furutani Pottery |
|
〇 Before first use, wash lightly with detergent and use as is. 〇 When serving oily or dark-colored dishes, rinse the piece in water first to dampen it; this makes it harder for stains to penetrate. 〇 Because the pottery is absorbent, it may change to a grayish color or show spots when soaked in water, but please be assured it will return to its original state once completely dried. 〇 After use, dry well before storing to prevent mold and stains. |
| Understanding "Handmade Pottery" Before Purchase |
|
〇 As each piece is handmade, individual differences occur in color, shape, pattern, size, thickness, and weight. Even with the same glaze and clay, uneven color and shading will occur. 〇 Hand-painted designs may also vary slightly in expression. 〇 Depending on the manufacturing process, some items may have small holes, black spots, line scratches, protrusions, pinholes, or slight wobbling/warping. 〇 While images are processed to be as close to the actual color as possible, colors and textures may look different depending on your computer or smartphone display. 〇 We deliver items that have cleared our final quality check, in addition to inspections by the manufacturer or the artist. 〇 Since product photos are samples, the item you receive will not be identical in every detail. 〇 We do not accept returns or exchanges due to customer preferences. Thank you for your understanding. 〇 We hope you enjoy the "charm" and "character" of handmade goods that mass-produced factory items do not have! |
