The kiln was opened in 1705 by Sanuemon Yanase, a potter invited from Koishiwara, Fukuoka Prefecture. In 1931, Mr. Muneyoshi Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei movement, visited Onta and saw the value of folk pottery in the fact that traditional techniques had been passed down. Mr. Bernard Leach, a potter, also received high praise, and Ontayaki became widely known. In 1995, it was certified as a national important intangible cultural asset preservation group, and in 2008, it was selected as a national important cultural landscape under the name of Ontayaki no Sato. The traditional techniques of Ontayaki include “Tobikanna”, “Hakeme”, “Finger painting”, “Comb painting”, “Uchikake” and “Nagashikake”.
