In 1931, Mr. Muneyoshi Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei movement, visited Onta and saw the value of folk pottery in the fact that traditional techniques had been passed down. Mr. Bernard Leach, a potter, also received high praise, and Ontayaki became widely known. In 1995, it was certified as a national important intangible cultural asset preservation group, and in 2008, it was selected as a national important cultural landscape under the name of Ontayaki no Sato.
